Nasahn Sheppard, IDSA
Nasahn Sheppard is the first divisional vice president of product design at REI, where he leads all creative aspects of REI’s Private Brands product design. Sheppard brings extensive experience to his role in leading transformational change. Previously, as a private consultant, he led creative work for brands such P&G, Samsung, Flip Video, Amgen, Hewlett Packard and SC Johnson. His award-winning work has been patented and recognized worldwide. Flip Video, hailed as "a moment of truth for personal technology," was honored as a Design of the Decade in IDSA’s International Design Excellence Awards.
Sheppard spoke at IDSA's International Conference 2015 in Seattle, as part of the Future of Design Leadership panel. He earned a bachelor of science degree in product design, with honors, from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA.
Sheppard calls IDEA one of the most recognized product design competitions. And he's offering advice to the designers from around the world who are entering IDEA. “Be authentic to your design journey,” says Sheppard. “Do not craft what you think you want the judges to hear. It’s far more important to share the problem you are trying to solve; the insight that changed your perspective; your creative solution; and how it will make a meaningful impact in people’s lives.”
He adds, "The creative range and accomplishments of the jury make it one of the most critically scrutinized awards in our industry. Awards in general help to raise awareness for the design profession and spotlight the incredibly talented design thinking and craft that often times lives in the background of people’s daily lives. I consider being a recipient of the IDEA Design of the Decade one of my career highlights."
