Silver to Steel

#CDDC16 Highlights CMOA Exhibit on IDSA Fellow Peter Muller-Munk

He's been hailed as one of the most influential designers of his generation. Now, attendees of IDSA's Central District Design Conference (#CDDC16) in Pittsburgh will get a closer look at the work of IDSA Fellow Peter Muller-Munk—the brilliant silversmith, pioneering industrial designer, esteemed educator and visionary.

Silver to Steel at the Carnegie Museum of Art is the first retrospective of Muller-Munk's 40-year career, with more than 120 works of hand-wrought silver and popular mid-century products—supported by drawings, multimedia interviews and period advertising. He began as a young silversmith at Tiffany & Co. and became a crucial, postwar designer—promoting the practice of industrial design through one of the top US design consultancies—Pittsburgh-based Peter Muller-Munk Associates.

CDDC attendees will get a chance to visit the exhibit during a private showing, 5–7pm on Friday, April 1 and during the public museum hours from 1 to 2pm on Saturday, April 2. IDSA Member Rachel Delphia, The Alan G. and Jane A. Lehman Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, and a Carnegie Mellon University industrial design alumna, will be on hand to answer questions during both time periods.

"Outside of dedicated design museums, it's really rare to glimpse so many industrial products on view,” says Delphia. “CDDC attendees will not want to miss the gleaming, mid-century appliances nor the period-inspired installation design. From Silex and Porter Cable, to Westinghouse, Texaco or Bell & Howell, there is something for everyone!”

On April 2, from 4–5:30pm, the conference will feature an hour-and-a-half-long presentation, brought to CDDC by CMOA, related to Muller-Munk and Steel City. IDSA Board of Directors Central District VP and CDDC Conference Chair Jeevak Badve, IDSA, will discuss Industrial "Strength" Design. Then Delphia will introduce IDSA Fellow Tucker Viemeister's talk on Peter Muller-Munk and Me: Parallel Lives.

Silver to Steel is open at CMOA's Heinz Galleries through April 11, 2016.
