#IDSAIDEA Moves Full Steam Ahead
Here's the latest on IDSA’s International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) 2016:
Onsite jurying has wrapped up at Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. 25 jurors—led by Jury Chair Cameron Campbell, IDSA— met from June 3 to 6, 2016. Bronze winners will be notified the week of June 17. An IDEA exhibit will open July 11 at The Henry Ford. Gold and Silver winners will be revealed August 17 at the IDEA 2016 Ceremony, free and open to the public; followed by a ticketed Gala.
For 35 years, IDEA has been honoring and promoting design excellence across a wide array of design and related disciplines. “I do think that’s the power of design,” says Campbell, who’s worked with industry giants such as Boeing, Herman Miller, Apple, Nike and BMW. “I’ve had the opportunity to be a part of the jury a few times and I’ve always greatly appreciated the critical discussions with my peers from diverse disciplines in defining the best of design.”
Some of the IDEA 2016 jurors are former IDEA winners. "There is so much opportunity for design to have a positive impact—by solving real needs and shaping a brighter future," says Intuit's Design Fellow/VP of Design Dickon Isaacs, IDSA.
Other jurors have served previously on an IDEA Jury. Steven Umbach, IDSA, is a former IDSA Board of Directors member and International Conference chair. "Good industrial design is more than just creating a beautiful object," he says. "It means optimizing a situation or solving a problem typically in a commercial setting with emphasis on form, function, manufacturing and business constraints, and especially the intended user group."
IDEA 2016 Juror Patricia Moore, FIDSA, has been hailed by ABC World News as One of 50 Americans Defining the New Millennium. “This is a serious endeavor but it’s also a joyous endeavor,” she says. “And it’s what defines us as designers and helps us to build for the next generation to come.”
