Categories

There are three main categories of IDSA membership. In addition, some members may achieve or be recognized with certain honors, including being named an IDSA Fellow or achieving Life or Emeritus status. Below is a description of the three major categories of membership that are available, when you are ready to JOIN:

  1. Professional Designers

Professional membership is available to any citizen or resident of the United States, Canada and Mexico—North America—who has either an undergraduate or graduate degree in industrial design or a related design discipline, and/or appropriate professional experience and whose primary professional responsibility as a practitioner or educator is the design of products, instruments, equipment, packages, transportation, environments, information systems or related design services. The cost is USD $375 per year.

Young Professional membership is available to any citizen or resident of a country in North America (as defined above) who is within five (5) years of having earned a graduate or undergraduate degree in industrial design or related discipline. The rate is USD $125 for Year 1 and USD $250 per year for Years 2 through 5. After that, the regular Professional membership rate applies.

International membership is available to any citizen or resident of a country outside North America (as defined above), who has either an undergraduate or graduate degree in industrial design or a related design discipline, and/or appropriate professional experience and whose primary professional responsibility as a practitioner or educator is the design of products, instruments, equipment, packages, transportation, environments, information systems or related design services. This category of membership carries all the privileges and benefits of Professional membership except the right to vote and hold office. The cost is USD $375 per year.

  2. Non-Designer Professionals

Affiliate Membership is available to professionals, i.e.., not college/university or graduate students, regardless of country of citizenship or residency, who do not hold a degree in industrial design or related design degree. This may include staff of design firms; corporations with a design interest; vendors serving the design industry; and entrepreneurs and others in the product, user experience and interactive design spaces. This category of membership carries all the privileges and benefits of Professional membership except the right to vote and hold office. The cost is USD $375 per year.

  3. Students of Design

Student membership is available to any citizen or resident of a country in North America (as defined above), who is enrolled in a degree program in industrial design or a related field at either the undergraduate or graduate level at a college or university. Student members may not vote or hold elected office in IDSA, at the national or local level—until they have graduated with their degree in industrial design at the undergraduate or graduate level. The cost is USD $50 per year for up to five consecutive years until graduation. After that, Young Professional membership rates become effective.

International Student membership is available to any citizen or resident of a country outside North America (as defined above), who is enrolled in a degree program in industrial design or a related field at either the undergraduate or graduate level at a college or university. International Student members may not vote or hold elected office in IDSA. The cost is USD $95 per year for up to five consecutive years until graduation. After that, the regular International membership rate becomes effective.
