Bill Hannon is a Professor Emeritus of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
After discharge from the Army he joined the firm of Morton Hollis Associates. Clients included Gillette, Rustcraft Greeting Cards and Parker Brothers Games. He was then recruited as the first Director of Design at the MacBick Company, which produced hospital equipment products and medical disposable devices. Hannon was responsible for Corporate Identity and Branding, Package Design, Graphic Design, and Advertising.
The MacBick program was featured in ID magazine. A few years later the MacBick Company was purchased by C. R. Bard a major player in the hospital/medical market.
Hannon then moved to Williams Associates as a Senior Designer. The Williams organization had clients that ranged from consumer products to the most advanced high tech firms. They included Raytheon, Keystone Cameras and Curtis Farms Supermarkets,
In the mid sixties Hannon co-established Corporate Design Consultants and served as CEO of the full service design consultancy. The firm was structured around three major functions: Graphic Design (corporate identity, \branding and package design), Industrial Design (product design and packaging construction) and Environmental Design (architecture and interior design). Clients included: Sheraton Hotels, Grace Lines cruise ships, Polaroid, U. S. Plywood and Waters Associates.
In 1971 Hannon was asked to become Chair of the Design Division at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The Division included the departments of Architecture, Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Design and Illustration. He later served the college in a number of capacities including Associate Dean for Design and Media, Assistant to the President and VP for External Affairs.
His work has been featured in Industrial Design, Packaging Design and Product Engineering magazines and the Design Show. It has also appeared in the books American Corporate Identity, Design in America and Boldly Graphic.
He has received awards from the Art Directors Club, the International Trade Mark Center, ID’s Annual Design Review and Package Design magazine to name a few. In 1989 he received the Walter Smith Distinguished Alumni award from MassArt. He is also the recipient of IDSA’s Boston Chapter’s Silver Lantern Award distinguished educator award. He is a Life Fellow of the Design Managemt Institute and in 1990 was elected a Fellow of Britain’s Royal Society of Arts.
Mr. Hannon has served in a number of professional capacities. He was recruited by the late Joseph Pariott, FIDSA to serve on the committee that merged IDI and ASID to create IDSA. He is a founding member and former Chair of the Boston Chapter. He is the Founder of the Design Management Institute and has served on the Board of the Art Directors Club and the Design Management Advisory Board of the Harrow Business School, University of Westminster, London. He has lectured at Harvard University; Rhode Island School of Design; London Business School; The Design Center, Toyamat Japan; University College, Cork Ireland; Georgia Institute of Technology; North Carolina State University; the European Academy of Design Stockholm; General Motors Design Center; and the Executive Training Center Ljubljana, Slovenia.
He has a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design an MS from the University of Massachusetts. He also attended the Boston Architectural College for a year. He is currently an Adjunct Professor at Suffok University in the Executive MBA program in the Innovation and Design Management cluster.
