Join Us for an Exciting 2011 Education Symposium in New Orleans
Education VP Mary Beth Privitera, IDSA
The community of design educators grows stronger with each passing academic year. Come join us for lively discussion and interchange of your areas of research, curriculum and academic life in design education at this year’s conference.
IDSA’s education council members Tod Corlett, IDSA, Steve Wilcox, IDSA, Peter Chamberlain, IDSA, Kevin Shankwiler, IDSA, AnnMarie Conrado, IDSA and Tygrve Faste, IDSA have diligently reviewed all of the abstracts and are currently nominating this year’s “Best Paper Award.” We are pleased to bring back this valuable honor and look forward to the winning paper’s publication in the winter issue of Innovation.
Benchmark, benchmark, benchmark! Please join your colleagues Pascal Malassigne, FIDSA and Jim Kaufman, FIDSA as they present the results of a salary survey specifically designed for design educators. Who doesn’t want to know how they bench regarding compensation across the nation? Let’s use this information and all get a raise!
We’ll spend some time learning about graduate education in the UK and our European counterparts. Do we want or need design PhD programs?
As we build our community further, you can expect to hear from Eric Anderson, IDSA who in his spare time has designed a proposal for a new structure within IDSA to support design educators, assist in our interchange of pedagogy and promote our strengths.
Lastly, to finish the day Phil Weilerstein, executive director of the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance, will moderate a panel on innovation and entrepreneurship in design education. Phil will first provide an overview of some of the issues and opportunities facing design faculty as they think about incorporating innovation and entrepreneurship into their teaching. Then, he'll outline the ways that NCIIA supports curricular development, best practices, student projects, etc. through grants, competitions, training and networking opportunities. Following this 30-minute overview, a faculty panel that is already incorporating innovation and entrepreneurship in their curricula and teaching will offer their perspectives and experiences. This 60-minute session will also highlight possible opportunities for collaboration.
