Joe Ballay

Joe Ballay, IDSA | MAYA Design

Joe Ballay is a nationally known industrial designer and a senior faculty member in the Department of Design at Carnegie Mellon University. At Rhiza Labs, Joe provides high-level strategy and design guidance to the management team.

Joe Ballay is also a founder and principal of MAYA Design, where he was a key developer of Workspace, a pioneering interface created for Digital Equipment Corporation that is credited with laying the foundation for the modern 3 dimensional GUI. Joe has also helped to guide the design of products in the domains of consumer electronics, interactive television, military logistics, fire protection, and computer peripherals. Joe holds an M.F.A. in design from Carnegie Mellon University. He also holds a B.S. in industrial management from Carnegie Institute of Technology and a B.F.A. in industrial design from the University of Illinois.
