Important Publicity Information
Press Release Embargo Date: July 18, 2008
BusinessWeek will publish the winners in its July 28th issue, which will hit newsstands Friday, July 18. One of the most beneficial aspects of winning an IDEA is the opportunity to raise awareness of your design firm and corporation/client profile among the business community and general public. However, IDSA’s contract with BusinessWeek gives them the exclusive right to break the story of the winners on July 18. BusinessWeek’s sponsorship is crucial to the program; when dealing with the media, please keep in mind:
- All press releases must be approved by IDSA prior to dissemination and must clearly state “Embargoed for Release until Friday, July 18.”
- Several publications have already agreed to the embargo date. When you are approached by publications prior to the embargo date, be sure to insist they also abide by the embargo date.
- Immediately notify your company advertising and public relations people that you have won the award. Make sure they understand the significance of this award, mentioning BusinessWeek's sponsorship.
- Make sure all staff respect the BusinessWeek release date of July 18th and the following guidelines:
- IDSA and BusinessWeek may publicize the competition and its outcome, including the names of the winning products, the proprietor of the winning products, and the names and likenesses of the individuals who contributed to the winning products.
- Your company and its representatives will not cite the award in any way which implies an endorsement of your product by IDSA and BusinessWeek; that the design was actually tested or validated as part of the competition; nor that the award is a confirmation of the efficacy of the design.
- You may describe the IDEA competition in one of two ways: as “co-sponsored by the Industrial Designers Society of America and BusinessWeek;” or as “presented by the Industrial Designers Society of America and sponsored by BusinessWeek.”
- Refer to the award as a Gold, Silver or Bronze IDEA Award or IDEA Finalist. Do not refer to the award as a medal, prize, or the “IDSA Award” or “BusinessWeek Award.”
BusinessWeek Coverage
BusinessWeek magazine will publish a list of all of the winners on its web site, www.businessweek.com. Due to space constraints BusinessWeek lists client and design firm credits only. Individuals will only be listed if they are unaffiliated with a company or firm. BusinessWeek will select the winners it features in photos and articles. IDSA supplies the magazine with copies of all of the winning entry forms and images, but has no say in the magazine’s choices. The magazine’s writers will be in touch with you if they want to pursue a story. In general, the better quality images you provide, the greater your chances of being featured. Note, just because you are contacted doesn’t mean you will be featured. Those decisions are often not made until the last week or two before publication. Do not announce that you will be featured in the magazine based on a casual remark by a writer.
IDSA's
Press Release & Press Kits
IDSA's press release
about the competition is now available for winners to use. The information in
this release will be useful to you in developing a release tailored
to your specific winning entry. Also, Gold winners may contact
IDSA for juror comments.
IDSA sends press kits to design,
business and general interest press. We also conduct a two-wave
press push: first, we mail the week of the embargo date to give
press a chance to prepare articles to publish post-embargo; and
second, we conduct an intense campaign during the IDSA national
conference focused on local press where the conference is being
held, this year in Phoenix, AZ. IDSA’s press kit contains a general
release on the program with descriptions of the Gold, Silver and
Bronze winners.
2008
Innovation Yearbook of Industrial Design Excellence
Gold winners receive several full pages of color coverage
in IDSA's Innovation Yearbook of Industrial Design Excellence; Silver
and Bronze winners will be shown with color photos and full descriptions
with credits. Finalists are listed without photos and descriptions
unless they purchase a Featured Finalist listing. Yearbooks are
now available for purchase.

Foundation Auction
(Donation commitments due August 8, 2008.)
Do you want to call global attention to your coolest products and help
raise money for design education at the same time? The Design Foundation
Auction provides a perfect opportunity.
The IDSA Design Foundation advances design education through scholarships;
fosters social responsibility among designers; and promotes awareness
of design’s contributions to society. Please consider donating one
or more items to the Foundation’s upcoming auction, which will be held
on September 20 during the IDSA National Conference in Phoenix, AZ.
We are asking IDEA entrants and winners to donate their award-winning
products or any other suitable objects, such as sketches or renderings,
prototypes or models, or any other design memorabilia. Items signed
by the designer or design team are especially popular. Your company
will receive full public recognition at the auction. We would like
to affirm your commitment and product contribution by
August 8, 2008 in order to properly plan and promote the auction
to our global audience of designers, media representatives and the
general public.
On behalf of the Design Foundation, I thank you in advance for considering
this important contribution to design education. Make a difference,
have fun and donate something exciting!

Special Opportunities/Obligations for Gold Winners
Innovation case study
– due June 18, 2008
Gold winners MUST write a case study. As part
of the IDEA submission, every entrant agreed to write a case
study if their design received a Gold award.
Your article should cover:
- The design problem and its market, technology and industry
context;
- The research you conducted to understand the problem and
the users’ needs;
- The reason for your design choices in form, materials and
processes (including wrong turns, stumbling blocks and brainstorms);
- How you arrived at your innovative ideas; and
- The impact of your design on the company.
The last point is vital given that the audience for this issue
includes business executives. Answering this question may take
research. If you can’t get percentage of sales increase, market
share earned, or increased number of users, perhaps you can
get a quote from one of the company’s top executives, distributors
or users. If your winner is an exhibit, you can show improvements
in the number of visitors. And there’s always the design's
reduction in cost/time to manufacture or fabricate.
Who Should Write the Article -
In every case, an article by the designer is better than an
article by a public relations person. Only the designer can
know what other designers will find important. Only the designer
can write effectively about the design process. The writer
should, however, keep in mind the business reader’s interests
and scope of understanding. Please avoid promotional language
and hype.
Editing -
IDSA edits all articles. You will be asked to review the edited
version to catch errors and suggest improvements.
Illustrating Your Case Study -
All winners receive at least one complimentary 4/color image.
The total number of visuals used—including 4/color photos,
line art and graphs—will depend on the strength of your article
and the quality of your visuals. It is essential that you
take the time to choose your images carefully and make sure
they are the best possible representations. Captions
are important and MUST be included for all images, even if
it seems obvious to you. Many readers scan rather than read,
so you can pull them into your article with your captions.

IDEA Ceremony Acceptors - due
September 1, 2008
The IDEA ceremony will be
held in Phoenix, AZ on September 13, the closing night of the
IDSA National Conference, followed by a gala party. We are
planning a presentation as dynamic as the winning designs,
with recognition of all the winners, and trophies presented
onstage to Gold winners. The presentation will include winning
designs and designer credits for each winner along with the
videos of the Gold winners. A representative from BusinessWeek magazine, the IDEA program’s sponsor, will help present the
awards along with IDSA President Michelle Berryman, IDSA, and
IDEA 2008 Jury Chair Alistair Hamilton, IDSA.
Note: There will be a rehearsal scheduled on the afternoon
of Saturday, September 13, for all Gold winners. In order
to participate in the evening ceremony, you MUST participate
in the afternoon rehearsal. You will receive a copy of the
rehearsal schedule and further details in late August.
IDSA MUST have the name of the representative who will be
accepting your award at the ceremony by September 1, or you
will not be able to accept your award during the ceremony.
Individual names will not be announced during the ceremony,
but will be used during rehearsal roll call. If your entire
design team plans to get up on stage, due to time limitation,
we have to ask that only one person be appointed to speak
for the team. Gold winners are also encouraged to bring a
client CEO who can say a few words about the importance of
design within their corporation. Email IDSA the name, title and affiliation of your ceremony
acceptor by September 1.
Extra
Trophy Order
One trophy per award-winning design is given at the ceremony. If
you wish to order extra trophies, complete and return the order
form.
