If I had a hammer that wouldn't recoil… This steel shafted hammer minimizes the shockwaves produced when it strikes a nail because of a thin slot cut into the head. The slot ends at an oval-shaped hole through the center that contains a shock-absorbing insert. At the moment of impact, the head flexes, the sides of the slot touch and the energy normally lost in recoiling action is redirected back into the nail, driving it further.
