D4M Webinar with Kara Pecknold: Dialogue Through Design
What: In the second of the 2011 Design for the Majority Section Webinar Series, Kara Pecknold will share her experiences, lessons, and methodologies for designing with women in Rwanda in a talk entitled Dialogue Through Design. Open to both IDSA members and non-members.
About the Presenter: Ms. Pecknold graduated with a degree in English Literature, taught business communications in Eastern Europe and led educational teams in Thailand. But it was her ongoing fascination with language, design and the global impacts of each that led her to return to Vancouver and pursue an MAA in Design at Emily Carr University, where she focused her research on cross-cultural design process. Her work in Rwanda has been included as a case study in IDEO's Human-Centered Design Toolkit.
As a design research consultant, Kara has worked on projects in health care and energy consumption. She has also been invited to collaborate on the development of communication tools for a national food fortification strategy in Rwanda. When not acting in this capacity, she can be found teaching at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, Canada where she has developed a course that connects students to the idea of designing for social innovation.
She is inspired by sustainable design for global impact and aims to pursue projects where she can explore appropriate and accessible solutions for those on the periphery, whether at home or away.
When: On Friday, March 11th from 1pm-2pm Eastern Time (10am-11am Pacific Time)
Moderated by Leslie Speer, Chair of the Design for the Majority Section and Assistant Professor at San Jose State University in Silicon Valley.
