Thinc Design Creates Exhibition for American Folk Art Museum Opening

From March 25-30, 2011, the American Folk Art Museum will dramatically transform the Park Avenue Armory’s historic 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall with the installation of more than 650 red and white American quilts, all of which are on loan from one private New York City collection. Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red and White Quilts will be the largest exhibition of quilts ever held in the city.

This unprecedented exhibition was created by Thinc Design, an award-winning New York-based firm, in collaboration with the American Folk Art Museum.Thinc has designed a display in which the quilts appear to defy gravity and spiral in mid-air, from floor to ceiling, filling the enormous volume of the Drill Hall. These spirals of quilts are arranged into circular pavilions that entice visitors to wander and explore. Notable quilts will be showcased on horizontal platforms to allow for up-close viewing. Throughout the exhibition, strategically placed seating allows visitors to immerse themselves in this spectacular environment.
