Call for Education Papers, Presentations, Panel Discussions and Posters | 2012 International Conference

Call for Papers (The 2012 Call for Papers is now closed)

You could present your education paper at the 2012 Eastman/IDSA Education Symposium (Aug. 15), held in conjunction with the IDSA 2012 International Conference!

The Future Is... about us. How we work, laugh, learn, cooperate, connect and stay healthy. Topic experts will address the dramatically changing playing field in business and technology in a format where attendees contribute to the understanding of the information.

We are in times of extreme economic stress and yet the rules of business and commerce keep changing at an almost impossible rate. How do the best stay ahead, and what is design’s role in addressing change?

If you can’t afford to get the next steps wrong, then this is the conference for you. This conference will explore our next steps as designers and business leaders from the perspective of people, technology and business.

As one of the world’s greatest design communities, Boston is the perfect location for this conversation. So, mark your calendars and prepare for a conference with a higher level of designer-to-designer interaction and dialogue than you’ve ever experienced before.

Prepare for a conference where you’ll find out what is on the lab tables today and what will be in the stores tomorrow.

Prepare for a conference where we connect the pieces of the past, present and future in a way that creates a fresh story about design’s role in impacting business.

Prepare for a conference that will tap into your imagination, your emotions, your senses, your passions, your intellect and your creativity.

And prepare to have a blast… The Future is… in Boston 8.15.2012

Abstract Submission Protocol:

  • You must submit abstracts online.
  • Make the body of the abstract blind without any reference to your name, company or school.  Keep the abstracts as brief as possible—400 words maximum—with no artwork.
  • Write both abstract and subsequent article in the third person.
  • Where possible, please provide references.

We accept abstracts in the following categories:

  • Presentation only
  • Publication only
  • Presentation and publication

Please specify on your abstract which category you would like to enter.

Note: Approval of the abstract does not guarantee presentation at the conference or publication on IDSA’s website. The jury will make the final evaluation for acceptance into any category on review of the finished piece. Although most of the articles accepted in the “presentation and publication” category will be accepted for both venues, the jury reserves the right to recommend that a paper submitted in that category be presented but not published, or published and not presented, at their discretion.

We are specifically looking for design relevant topics in the following areas:

  • The future of technology: its role in design and designing for technological advancement, etc.
  • The future of business: preparing design business leaders, designing business, etc.
  • The future of people: preparing design graduates, the skills and attributes within curriculum (grad and undergrad), supporting professional design education, etc.

Review Criteria for Papers, White Papers and Abstracts

Papers accepted at IDSA’s International Conference include scholarly works from academia and industry. IDSA's Education Council,   along with support from IDSA’s special interest areas, reviews the submissions and promotes high standards of excellence among submissions. As an aid to those submitting their work for review, the Council offers the following guidelines used to steer the jury process:

The following is what we seek in abstracts, proposals or papers:

Forward-moving:

  • The abstract, proposal or paper shows observations; techniques and vision that are fresh and forward thinking, challenge existing norms and advance the profession.

Relevant:

  • The subject is relevant to industrial design education and practice, both nationally and internationally.

Clear:

  • The proposal or objective is well defined.
  • Findings and data are clearly stated, logically reported, and build to a sound and relevant conclusion.
  • Methodology and references are cited; research protocol is defensible.

Well written:

  • The abstract, proposal or paper is succinct, well written and proofed, interesting and easy to understand.

Important Deadlines and Information:

  • The abstract deadline was March 23, 2012.
  • Abstract must be submitted via an Online Submission Form.
  • Pending approval of abstract, final paper will be due approximately six weeks after acceptance announcement. The final papers for publication and posters will need to follow templates, which will be posted on IDSA’s website.
