Budd Steinhilber
Budd Steinhilber, FIDSA
Steinhilber was born in New York City, growing up in Woodstock, N.Y. He studied at the High School of Music and Art in New York City and apprenticed at the Loewy office while still a student at Pratt Institute.
He graduated from Pratt in 1943 and started work with Dohner & Lippincott in New York. In 1947, he became part of the team that designed the Tucker car. In 1949, he joined Read Viemeister in Yellow Springs, Ohio as a partner until 1964 when he relocated to San Francisco and established a partnership with Gene Tepper (Tepper & Steinhilber Associates).
In 1975, he partnered with graphic designer Barry Deutsch, forming Steinhilber & Deutsch Inc. He taught at the Dayton Art Institute and lectured at many other schools. An active member of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) he was honored as a Fellow of IDSA in 1984.
In 1987, he relocated to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and served as Secretary Treasurer of IDSA from 1989 to 1990.
Since 1989 he has served as a design advisor to Konawaena High School Solar Car Team and in 1997 was an NGO delegate to the Global Warning Conference in Kyoto, Japan.
Budd has been a long time contributor to the IDSA Design Quarterly, INNOVATION.
