In working to transform routers from niche products to mass-market goods, the designers for the N1 Wireless Router focused on the setup experience, wanting a device that anyone could install without assistance. From when users first open the box, guided by an “Open Here” sticker, to the quick installation guide they find sitting on top, every consumer touchpoint gives users the information and confidence they need to successfully install the router. Rather than the standard cryptic blinking LED scheme, the router’s display provides a more comprehensible pictorial representation of the network. If there’s a problem, a blinking orange icon indicates the problem area, which users can decipher with the handy solution card, empowering consumers to be their own tech support.
