Of the communities that designers serve and the clients' design briefs that they reframe, there is one community that it in many ways neglects its own. Acknowledging the radically changing terrain in design practice, advocacy and education, it is time to reconnect with the new mandates and imperatives that define the next product designer. What is the role of the artifact in systems, culture and behavior? What are the opportunities of increased transparency around non-monetary costs? And what does the global community demand of our profession as the boundaries between design disciplines continue to blur? These critical questions will come to define our practice in the next decade; we have to have the discourse now.
