Enjoy the twisted future vision of Woody Allen's Sleeper (1973).
2157 W Erie (Tim Copeland's Backyard)
Chicago, IL 60612
(2-Blocks west of Damen, 3 blocks south of Chicago)

Filled with one-liners, Allen's film both satirizes the 1970's and parodies sci-fi books and past classics, such as Buck Rogers "Serial" (1939), Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and A Clockwork Orange (1971), George Lucas' THX 1138 (1971), George Orwell's futuristic novel 1984, and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. It also evokes such slapstick comedy classics as Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton films, the Keystone Kops, Chaplin's Modern Times (1936) and the Marx Brothers' Duck Soup (1933). Like Chaplin in many of his films, Allen directed, wrote, starred in, and composed the soundtrack for this film." (http://www.filmsite.org/slee.html) IDSA Midwest Summer Outing 2004!

ABOUT, WITH, AND FOR CONFERENCE
October 22 and 23, 2004 (Friday and Saturday)

AWF is a collaborative forum for professionals and students to share methods for understanding people. The conference bridges social research, design and business in order to improve a human-centered approach to design.

Save the Date
AWF takes place on Friday and Saturday, October 22 and 23, at the Courtyard Marriott in downtown Chicago. Friday is a half day starting at noon, and Saturday is a whole day. We will have a social event on Friday night, and a sponsored lunch on Saturday.

Theme
This year's theme is Involving, Engaging and Educating Others. Presentations, panel discussions and workshops are centered around design as an exploratory process, and the take-away is often a greater knowledge of how practitioners in different fields understand people in order to create relevant design solutions. Specific topics discussed will include design education,
participatory design, client collaboration, internal decision-making, research tools and methods, and design research case studies.

November 12, 2004 (Friday) 7pm
Rotofugi Toy Store Gallery, Chicago Damen in the East Village

Rotofugi, Chicago's own designer toy store, is hosting a reception for the Fuse-ID designed plush toy, Furilla. From the Rotofugi website:

The party is Friday, Nov. 12, beginning at 7pm (wrapping up around 11pm). Don't be square.

Meet Furilla artist/discoverer Toren Orzeck and party down as we celebrate the opening of "Furilla: The Untold Story" in our humble little gallery space. OK, it's more like a gallery corner, we admit it. Regardless, stop on by Friday night for drinks and listen to Clayton Counts spin an eclectic mix of jazz, rock and hip-hop. Win signed Furilla goodies (or buy them and get Tory to sign them). Good times.

The show continues until December 31, 2004.

Background:
Furilla, a highly-poseable and monocular creature, was discovered by Portland, OR -based industrial designer and artist Toren Orzeck. Since his original discovery Orzeck has further bio-engineered several mutations of Furilla including the amazing cross-breed known as Bearilla. He has also overseen the creation of several short documentary films covering the previously unknown Furilla species. Orzeck will be displaying his discoveries and short films at Rotofugi. And oh yeah, Furilla Rocks!

Microsoft/IDSA Designer Spotlight Series presents...
Gerard Furbershaw on "Design Firm Financial Management"
Thursday, November 18, 2004, 1:00 PM EST

IDSA Member Cost only $99 - your whole office may join you in your conference room! Just as a pilot depends on numerous gauges to provide feedback on navigation, altitude, speed and fuel consumption, design firm owners and senior management members need a "financial cockpit" to monitor the key indicators that reflect the financial status of their businesses. Unfortunately, many design firms fly blindly. This presentation will expose attendees to fundamental financial concepts and monitoring techniques that will help them understand whether their design firms are flying on course... or headed for the ground! Space is limited, so sign up today at http://new.idsa.org/webmodules/articles/anmviewer.asp?a=813z=31.

This seminar will be brought to your desk by Microsoft Live Meeting Technology. If your schedule is full, buy the seminar to view at a later date.
